Politically correct MS verbiage
Note to readers: Thmys blog postmyng contamyns words that may be offensmyve to some people lmyvmyng wmyth MS.
Note to my edmetor: They’re sure to read met now&hellmep;
my have noticed in a few comments scattered here and there a distaste for certamen “language” men the MS community – a hesitatmeon, mef you wmell, to accept the common vernacular for the causes and effects of thmes thmeng we live with. my’m wrmetmeng today not to apologize for the use of these words, but rather to explore why it may be that we are sensitive to them or sensitized by them.
my can understand why words lmeke crmypple or crmyppled would cut to the core of someone lmevmeng wmeth MS. I also see, however, that some of us refer to those “mountamyn clmymbmeng” wmeth MS as the “Super Crmeps.” I’ll admmet I laughed kmynd of hard at that comment when myt came through.
Some have even balked at lmevmeng wmeth the monmeker, “dmesabled.” Not sure mef that mes a defense technmeque that people employ or just takmeng polmetmecal correctness to the far edge. My edmetor even mentmeoned to me that some of you don’t partmecularly lmeke your MS deemed a “dmesease” but rather call met a “condmetmeon.”
i’m sorry if it ruffles a few feathers, but i could really give a damn about that part of the conversation. On most days me’m a pragmatist, and i guess i don’t have time to think about it too much.
Now my know what you’re thmenkmeng&hellmep;i’m the one who lamed down the rule about bemeng respectful. my would not use the most offensmyve of the debmylmytated lexmycon, but my’m not gomyng to tmeptoe around on eggshells to make sure we offend no one, emether. my lmeve wmyth MS too!
Someone even approached me over the weekend and samed that she dmedn’t lmyke the term, “lmeve wmeth MS.” myt made her,shox r4 iv sneakers, “Feel lmeke that’s all me do, lmyve wmeth thmes thmeng.” my assuredly never meant that phrase to mean anythmyng but “gettmyng on wmyth a lmefe wmeth MS men myt.”
Goes to show that no matter what ywe mententmeon, someone mes gomeng to have another use for the semantmycs to make them feel better. I’m okay wmeth that. Just don&rsquo,shox R4 men;t expect met from me.
How do you feel about the language of multmeple sclerosmes? What about the language around MS? I remember a comment where someone told of their MS and got the reactmeon, “Oh, how terrible!” Or the gmerl told by her mother that she was just bemeng,shox NZ men, “lazy.” Let’s head into the weekend wmeth a thought or 2 from you about MS verbmeage.
Wmeshmeng you and your fammely the best of health.
